London Russian Ballet School was founded in 2010 by artistic director Evgeny Goremykin, a leading soloist in Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet for almost 20 years, with director Harriet Pickering, to offer training in professional Russian Ballet. This training is made available regardless of background and financial circumstances. Inclusivity is the defining ethos of the school, a principle taken from Evgeny’s own ballet education.
The school has grown in size and stature, expanding its studio space threefold, and further extensive development is planned (see Premises for more details). Having started with just two students, LRBS’s numbers continue to increase each year and there is now a body of students aged 14-19 in full-time vocational training. In accordance with the school’s belief in equal opportunity for all regardless of background, subsidies are offered on termly rates to all those who need them. LRBS has found that there are very many young people seeking access to the world of ballet, and it endeavours to provide this access purely according to the merit of its applicants.
As the student body has grown so has the roster of exceptionally qualified ballet teachers. The aim of the school has remained constant throughout its short history: to offer access to the knowledge and traditions of the Russian school. The Russian system relies on a chain of knowledge being passed from one generation to the next. LRBS therefore recognises the importance of teaching from those who have themselves been taught by highly experienced renowned artists, and is unique in providing teachers who all have backgrounds dancing at leading soloist level or above on the Russian stage and who were all trained in Russia at the great Russian Schools. It is only in this way that the art and skill of professional Russian Ballet may be transferred from teacher to student, and it is this methodology that makes Russian ballet unique.
The success of this method may be seen in one of our students who was previously failing in an English ballet school and who has now been awarded a place at the Bolshoi Ballet company. The school has greatly grown in confidence since its inception, as it has become clear that students of all ages view its demanding teaching style as a gateway to excellence.
LRBS is also the only vocational ballet school to insist on academic study at A-Level at the same time as ballet education. LRBS strives to give its vocational students the richness choice both now and in the future to receive a university education. Both the public exams syllabus and a great deal besides are taught in order to encourage a curious and hard working attitude.
Adult classes have also always been a major aspect of the school. The adult students revel at the chance to receive world-class teaching from our instructors, while taking extra enjoyment from the knowledge that the costs of their classes go directly towards funding training and education for underprivileged young people who would not otherwise have such opportunities.
LRBS is a vocational charity that has performed on numerous occasions in public theatres and as part of outreach programmes for literally thousands of young schoolchildren in Lambeth and London. Please visit our Charity page for more general information or our Romantic Revolution page to learn about our latest major charitable event. The organic growth of the school within the borough of Lambeth, with outreach work primarily focused on the local community, has created a strong foundation of local students taking lessons.
